What is a webmaster?
Webmasters take care of Web site content and all
the artistic and technical details of keeping sites up on the Web. This
includes ironing out difficulties with the hosting service or recommending
changes to hosting arrangements.
Webmasters also:
- perform design changes
- add site features like web catalogs and shopping
carts
- check browser compatibility
- rewrite text content for better readability
and clarity
- recommend loading speed improvements
- improve site usability and navigation
- test links and functions regularly
- analyze site traffic reports for trends or problems
- set up and maintain email forwarding
- promote the site on the web, including effective
search engine submissions
Browser capabilities, search engine rules and other
web technology, trends and fashions change very rapidly. The web "fact"
you learned two months ago may already be obsolete! Webmasters must
stay up to date on all of it.
What is content?
Anything contained in a Web page that is meant
to attract visitors. Information on product specifications or newsworthy
photos are content. Animated banner ads are not content.
Is the Web the same as the Internet?
Not really. The Web is a large collection of interconnected
files written in a special code for fast transmission. Web pages are
transmitted over the Internet, but so are many other kinds of information,
like email.
How much do Web sites cost to create?
Personal pages cost nothing (aside from your time)
if you build them yourself with "free" or bundled software.
Professional quality sites cost from \\$150 to $5 million, depending on
the size and complexity.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a string of text that is associated
with an IP address in a special Web server called a Domain Name Server
(DNS). Each Web site has a dedicated IP address, but since 208.2.80.37
is not a very compelling designation, the domain name (www.YourName.com)
is used instead.
